Eulogy for Siciid Gahayr By; Ahmed Mohamed
Today, I am bringing a Pen and a Paper into harmonious union, as a testament to the indelible memory of an extraordinary soul, Siciid Gahayr, who departed from this earthly realm on the solemn date of 28 October 2023. Siciid, a luminary among mortals, selflessly devoted his entire existence to the noble cause of serving his fellow beings and ceaselessly pursuing the sacred tenets of justice. Originating from the majestic city of Hargiesa in the year 1986, Siciid embarked upon a profound odyssey through the tapestry of life, distinguished by an unwavering dedication to championing the rights of humanity and amplifying the voices of those tragically silenced by the cruel hands of fate.
Siciid Gahayr, dedicated his life to teaching, championing human rights, advocating for the marginalized, and expressing his creativity through celebrated poetry and captivating writing. Regrettably, he faced numerous unjust arrests by the Somaliland Authorities due to his unwavering commitment to advocating for human rights and fearlessly speaking out on behalf of those who have been silenced.
Siciid’s early years were marked by adversity, as he became a refugee in eastern Ethiopia, Camp Abokor. It was during this time that he started his early education, displaying a thirst for knowledge that would shape the rest of his life. Despite the challenges he faced, Siciid’s determination and resilience propelled him forward.
After the civil war ended, Siciid returned to Hargeisa, where he continued his education. He pursued both his middle and high school studies with unwavering dedication, never losing sight of his dreams. Eventually, Siciid enrolled in Hargiesa University, graduating in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management. This achievement was a testament to his perseverance and the value he placed on education.
Siciid was not only a devoted scholar but also a loving family man. He entered into the sacred bonds of marriage twice and was blessed with a son named Cadnaan Siciid Gahayr. Hopefully, Siciid’s legacy will live on through his son, who will carry forward his values and principles.
He possessed an unwavering passion as a tireless champion of human rights, an innate calling that resonated deeply within him. His unwavering dedication was directed towards empowering those marginalized in society, amplifying their voices, and fearlessly fighting for their fundamental rights. Amidst a multitude of impactful experiences, one particular memory remains etched in my consciousness – the moment I had the privilege to accompany Siciid on a compelling advocacy campaign to Gabilay. With shared resolve, we embarked on a journey to champion the cause of a Somaliland citizen, unjustly surrendered to the clutches of a foreign regime, Jabuuti. Although regrettably unable to secure his liberation, Siciid’s indomitable spirit and unyielding commitment radiated brilliantly throughout our collective endeavors.
Siciid was not merely a fervent advocate, but also an exceptionally skilled author, poet, and educator. Through his profound writings and profound teachings, he aimed to enlighten and motivate others, urging them to take a stand for righteousness. His words possessed an extraordinary ability to stir emotions and influence thoughts, creating a long-lasting impression on all those fortunate enough to engage with his work. His enduring legacy endures through his writings, teachings, activism, and poetry. Gahayr’s invaluable contributions have left an indelible imprint on Somali literature and society, forever etching his name as a genuine champion of education, justice, and the formidable might of language.
He was a beacon of hope in a world often marred by injustice and inequality. His unwavering dedication to human rights advocacy and his commitment to uplifting the marginalized will forever be remembered. As we bid farewell to a true hero, let us be inspired by his legacy and continue the work he started. May Siciid’s soul rest in eternal peace, knowing that his efforts were not in vain, and that he has left behind a world that is a little brighter because of him.
